The ongoing debate in the world is circling around Nutella.
If you ask a person from the company that makes this popular breakfast among the kids, he will tell you that it’s completely safe and natural for the kids.
I really doubt that.
They say, and it’s written on the label, Nutella is made of hazelnuts, a small amount of sugar and dark chocolate.
According to Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, an obesity specialist at the University of Ottawa, Nutella is packed with more sugar and fewer hazelnuts that are written on the label.
However, you don’t need to be a specialist to know that.
To bring you the real picture what’s in there, read the following.
- 70% saturated fat and processed sugar by weight
- 2 tablespoons of Nutella contain 200 calories (99 calories come from 11 grams of fat and 80 calories from 21 grams of sugar)
- The chocolate-hazelnut spread contains 15 mg of sodium and 2g of protein per spoon
This doesn’t look like a healthy breakfast as far as I can tell. Processed chocolate mixed with modified vegetable oils and sugar seems to be making its path to obesity.
Worst of all, most of these oils you can spot in Nutella are nutritionally void. To get the Nutella taste, all of these oils have been processed with high-heat and depleted of all nutrients like omega-3 and Vitamin E. Plus, they often contain lots of chemicals.
If this sounds scary to you, as it sounds to me, I hope I found the perfect recipe for Nutella.
Kids can force you to buy it. You can’t be ignoring their wishes forever.
Instead buying something that will harm their health and make them fat, you can do this instead.
Here is the recipe:
- 1l organic milk
- 200 g grass-fed butter
- 6 tbsp. wholemeal flour
- 6 tbsp. cocoa powder
- 200g powdered sugar
- 1 egg
- 200g. Hazelnuts
- Grind the hazelnuts in a food processor
- Mix the cocoa powder, powdered sugar and flour in a bowl
- Add half a liter of milk and 1 egg.
- Mix well
- Pour the other half of the milk in a pan and bring it to a boil
- When the milk boils, add the mixture of cocoa powder, sugar, and flour.
- Stir constantly
- Add the ground nuts in there
- Reduce the heat, but don’t stop stirring the mixture. Make sure it thickens
- Remove it from the heat and add the butter
- When it gets cold, use a mixer to make sure it doesn’t have any lumps
- Store in a glass and refrigerate
- Shelf life: 1 month.
This is a healthier version of the Nutella you will buy from the store. At least, you know what you put in there.
