Malik, Azhar, Sohail given hope for World Cup

KARACHI: A source from within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India (PTI) that Shoaib Malik, Azhar Ali and Sohail Tanvir have been told that their services might be required by the team if any player got injured.

“Malik, Azhar and Tanvir have been told to be on standby so that if some players have fitness issues in World Cup, the team management wants to be sure they can get quick replacements if required,” the source told PTI.

The source said either Malik or Azhar will be joining Sohail for a trip to Australia-New Zealand to participate in the event if need arose as they currently the best performers of the on-going President’s Cup.

“The tour selection committee has given its consent for these players but will let the board know about the final two names when required,” he added.

Sohaib Maqsood, Ehsan Adil and Wahab Riaz were named by the source when asked about the players who were facing fitness problems.

“Malik and Azhar are both on the standby list as they can also bowl,” the source added.

Earlier, left-arm pacer Junaid Khan also incurred an injury while practicing in the nets and was sent back for recuperation at the National Cricket Academy. The source said that Junaid will be recalled if he proves 100% match fitness and after receiving clearance from the medical panel of the PCB.

“He is presently in a rehabilitation process and resting,” he concluded.
