The colors of Kashmir

Reading a landscape through seasons, settlements and the ordinary details a photograph can easily leave out.

Look slowly

The old page was a visual entry. A useful way to approach a landscape story is to slow down before naming what makes it beautiful. Look for how water, cultivated land, paths and buildings relate to each other. A mountain scene can contain evidence of daily work that disappears when the view is reduced to a postcard.

A place is more than its scenery

Kashmir refers to a wider region with complex geography and a disputed political history. A photograph should be captioned with a specific location when that information is known. Culture, language and lived experience vary across the region; an image cannot stand in for all of them. Read local writers alongside travel accounts to understand what a visitor’s frame may leave outside it.

A thoughtful approach to travel images

The mountain illustration used for this edition is an editorial visual, not an identified documentary photograph of Kashmir. If planning an actual journey, verify the exact location, entry requirements, access restrictions and current official advice. When making your own pictures, ask before photographing people closely and respect private and religious spaces. Remember the work of the guides, hosts and residents who make a journey possible. Their stories deserve as much attention as the view.
